Theosophical Physics: A Proposed New Approach to the Science of Mantra, Sound and Consciousness

New research is bringing mantra and sound into neuroscience

For centuries, mantra recitation has been studied mainly through religion, philosophy and spiritual practice. That boundary is becoming less clear as researchers use EEG, fMRI, heart-rate monitoring and other tools to study what happens in the brain and body during chanting.

This growing body of research does not prove the spiritual claims made about mantras. It does, however, raise a scientific question: can repeated and highly structured sounds produce measurable changes in brain activity, breathing, attention and emotional responses?

Dr. Pradip Mishra has proposed Theosophical Physics as a possible interdisciplinary framework for studying that question. The proposal places sound and mantra within a research setting that can draw from physics, neuroscience, acoustics, cognitive science and Sanskrit phonetics.

Early research on the Gayatri Mantra

One early study that examined the subject was published in 2016. Researchers studied the effect of listening to the Gayatri Mantra using EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

The EEG part involved 12 participants, while eight participants took part in the fMRI experiment. The researchers reported activity in several brain regions, including the superior temporal gyri, insula, inferior parietal lobule and cerebellum. The study also noted that its small sample limited the interpretation of some EEG findings.

The study is important less for proving a particular effect and more for showing that mantra-related practices can be examined with standard neuroscience methods.

A newer study looks at emotional processing

Research published in 2025 has added another data point. A study on Gayatri Mantra meditation used event-related potentials and psychological measures to examine emotional processing.

The research involved 24 healthy men. Twelve were classified as meditation practitioners and 12 as non-practitioners. The study was conducted by researchers with affiliations including the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

The researchers reported differences in neural responses to negative emotional stimuli, along with differences in measures related to emotional competence and non-attachment.

Such findings should be read with care. The sample was small, and the study compared groups based on their existing practice rather than testing a large randomised population over a long period. Still, it adds to the case for studying mantra through measurable brain and behavioural outcomes.

A 2025 review finds a wider research base

The strongest recent development may be a systematic review rather than a single experiment.

A 2025 review published in Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Cognitive Science searched PubMed and PsycINFO for neuroimaging studies involving chanting, mantra and repetitive prayer. The search produced 899 records. After screening, 24 studies were included.

Across these studies, researchers reported links between chanting and brain regions involved in attention and emotional regulation, including the prefrontal cortex, insula and cingulate areas. Some EEG studies also reported increased theta activity, while several studies reported changes involving parts of the default mode network.

The review also made an important point. The studies varied widely in sample size, participant groups, imaging methods and control conditions. Because of this variation, the authors did not conduct a formal meta-analysis.

That means the current evidence shows a research signal, not a final scientific explanation.

The body also responds to chanting

The question is not limited to the brain.

A study published in the Journal of Religion and Health examined 12 minutes of group chanting using the sound “Om.” Thirty-four participants were divided between vocal and silent chanting groups. Researchers measured salivary cortisol and self-reported anxiety before and after the session.

Both groups showed lower cortisol levels and lower reported anxiety after chanting. The decrease in reported anxiety was greater in the vocal chanting group.

The study does not establish that “Om” has a unique biological effect. Breathing rate, attention, group activity and the act of repeated vocalisation may all contribute to the result.

That distinction matters if mantra research is to move from traditional claims to laboratory science.

Different ways of chanting may produce different responses

Another 2025 study examined whether the way a mantra is recited changes the body’s response.

Researchers studied 40 male participants aged 20 to 25 and compared loud chanting, chanting with lip movement, silent chanting and a no-chanting condition. They measured heart-rate variability and respiratory variables using ECG-based recordings.

The results showed differences in autonomic measures between the conditions. Loud and lip-movement chanting were associated with changes in heart rate and frequency-domain HRV measures, while silent chanting showed a different pattern.

This finding points to an area that is often missed in popular discussions about mantra. The effect may not come from the words alone. Vocal effort, breathing pattern, rhythm, attention and the physical act of speaking may all play a role.

Why Sanskrit phonetics could matter

Traditional Sanskrit recitation offers another area for study.

Vedic and other Indian recitation systems preserve rules for pronunciation, pitch, timing and articulation. These features make them different from ordinary conversational speech.

Research into chanting across cultures has also begun to examine whether different traditions share acoustic features. One recent study compared 242 chants from seven traditions with 126 songs and 616 speech samples. The research looked at features such as pitch, rhythm and vocal delivery.

This does not show that Sanskrit has a special biological property. It does suggest that chanting can be treated as a structured acoustic signal.

That makes it possible to ask more precise questions about how the brain responds to pitch, repetition, rhythm, vowel sounds and changes in breathing.

The Durga Constant enters the discussion

Within this proposed framework, Dr. Pradip Mishra has also introduced the Durga Constant (द) as a proposed Indian constant for studying relationships between sound-based patterns and geometric forms.

The proposal links the constant to the name of Goddess Durga and treats its value as dependent on the medium in which the relevant pattern is observed.

At present, the Durga Constant should be treated as a proposal rather than an established physical constant. It would need clear mathematical definitions, independent testing, published methods and reproducible results before it could be considered part of established science.

That distinction is important. A scientific name or mathematical symbol does not become a scientific constant simply because it has been proposed. Its usefulness has to come from measurement, prediction and repeatable results.

What could Theosophical Physics study?

The proposed field could focus on a simple question: how does organised sound affect living systems?

That question can be studied without assuming that a mantra has supernatural properties.

Researchers could record EEG activity while participants listen to or recite different mantras. fMRI could be used to study changes in brain regions and networks. Heart-rate variability could provide information about autonomic responses. Respiratory sensors could track breathing patterns. Acoustic analysis could measure pitch, frequency, duration and intensity.

Researchers could then compare these results with ordinary speech, meaningless syllables, translated passages and acoustically matched sounds.

Such comparisons would help separate the effect of meaning from the effect of sound.

Controlled experiments would be essential

For Theosophical Physics to become a serious research programme, its claims would need to meet normal scientific standards.

Studies would need suitable control groups, larger samples and clear definitions of the sounds being tested. Researchers could use preregistered hypotheses, blinded assessment where possible, standardised audio recordings and repeated experiments at different research centres.

A useful experiment, for example, could compare a Sanskrit mantra with a non-Sanskrit sequence that has a similar number of syllables, rhythm and acoustic profile. Another experiment could compare vocal chanting with listening, silent repetition and ordinary speech.

The aim would not be to prove or disprove a religious tradition. The aim would be to identify which physical and cognitive variables produce a measurable effect.

The proposed field sits between existing disciplines

There is already a place in science for fields that connect different areas of knowledge.

Biophysics studies physical processes in living organisms. Psychophysics examines the relationship between physical stimuli and perception. Neuroscience studies the nervous system and its relationship with behaviour and cognition. Acoustics examines sound and its physical properties.

Theosophical Physics, as proposed by Dr. Pradip Mishra, would seek to bring some of these areas together with Sanskrit phonetics and Indian theories of consciousness.

The proposal therefore does not need to replace physics or neuroscience. It can instead be viewed as a research question that draws methods from several established fields.

From spiritual claims to testable questions

The biggest change would be methodological.

Traditional discussions may ask whether a mantra has a particular spiritual power. Science must ask a different question: what can be measured?

Does a specific sound pattern change EEG activity? Does the effect remain when the meaning of the words is removed? Does pitch matter? Does rhythm affect breathing? Does repeated vocalisation alter heart-rate variability? Do different phonetic structures produce different neural responses?

These questions can be tested.

If repeated experiments produce the same results, researchers can build models around them. If the results do not hold under controlled conditions, the original claim can be revised or rejected.

A field that still needs evidence

The idea of Theosophical Physics remains a proposed framework, not an established scientific discipline. The current research on chanting provides reasons to study sound, attention, breathing and neural activity, but it does not establish that Sanskrit mantras have unique supernatural effects.

The recent evidence is also limited by small samples and different experimental designs. The 2025 systematic review itself points to the variation across existing studies as a barrier to drawing a single conclusion.

That caution does not make the research less interesting. It defines the work that remains.

The central question is no longer whether mantra should be studied only as a matter of faith or tradition. Modern instruments can measure many of the physical and biological processes involved in chanting.

For Theosophical Physics, the next step would be to turn its proposals into precise hypotheses and test them under conditions that other researchers can reproduce. If that process produces consistent results, the study of mantra, sound and consciousness could become a more defined area of interdisciplinary research.
