1. Can you provide an overview of your book and how it addresses key challenges in the world today?
Ascent of Geopolitics is an attempt to encourage readers to examine the geopolitical assumptions and mental constructs that become deeply ingrained through culture, education, political narratives and social conditioning.
Over time, societies can begin accepting certain ideas about nations, borders, power and international relations as self-evident truths, without examining the historical or economic evidence behind them.
My objective was therefore not simply to tell readers what to think, but to provide extensive documentary and historical material through which they can develop an independent perspective.
The book examines geopolitics and geoeconomics together, because political decisions are often inseparable from economic interests, resources, trade, geography and strategic power.
By bringing historical events, treaties, agreements, economic relationships and documented sources together, I hope to encourage readers to look beyond simplified explanations of today’s conflicts and understand the deeper forces that have shaped them.
2. What inspired you to write this book, and what specific expertise or experiences do you bring to the subject matter?
My inspiration came largely from my professional life and extensive international travel.
For nearly 35 years, my profession as a Captain took me across different parts of the world and allowed me to interact directly with people from a wide range of cultures, societies and economic backgrounds.
During my travels, particularly while working on oil-related contracts in the Middle East and other international regions, I had opportunities to observe realities on the ground that I felt were often very different from the simplified narratives presented through mainstream media.
These experiences motivated me to investigate further.
Over nearly a decade, I read extensively, collected historical and documentary material, and spoke with people ranging from individuals at the grassroots level to people connected with diplomatic, political and strategic circles.
The book is the result of that long process of observation, research, reading and questioning.
3. Could you share some of the most valuable insights or takeaways that readers can expect from your book?
One of the central ideas of the book is that political decisions cannot always be understood purely through political or ideological explanations. Economic interests, resources, trade, finance, geography and strategic calculations can play equally important roles.
The book therefore examines the economic dimensions underlying political decisions and international conflicts.
Another important theme is the role of information.
I believe readers should not accept any geopolitical narrative—whether from mainstream media, political institutions or alternative sources—without examining the underlying evidence and historical context.
The book presents my research and interpretations while providing documentary references and bibliographies that allow readers to investigate many of the subjects independently.
Because the book covers a very broad historical and geographical spectrum, I do not necessarily expect readers to consume it in a single sitting.
In many ways, I see Ascent of Geopolitics as a reference book or dictionary of geopolitical ideas—something readers can return to when they want to understand a particular country, conflict, treaty, historical development or economic relationship.
4. Can you highlight any case studies or real-world examples from your book that illustrate the principles you discuss?
The book contains numerous historical and geopolitical examples, including agreements, treaties, contracts and major political developments, many of which are presented with dates and documentary references.
Rather than relying solely on contemporary commentary, I have attempted to direct readers toward the original or established historical sources wherever possible.
The bibliography at the end of individual chapters provides readers with references to the books and other sources used in developing the material.
The intention is to allow readers to go beyond the narrative presented in the book and conduct their own investigation.
5. Are there any particular challenges or obstacles you encountered while writing this book, and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was the sheer scale of the subject.
The book covers approximately two thousand years of geopolitical development and examines events across a large number of countries and regions.
Researching such a broad subject required an enormous amount of reading, cross-referencing and documentation.
My professional travels also gave me the opportunity to speak with people from different cultures and backgrounds, including individuals at the grassroots level and people with experience in diplomatic and international environments.
My work in the Middle East and other parts of the world, including involvement in oil-related contracts, gave me additional opportunities to observe geopolitical and economic realities firsthand.
It took years of research and compilation to bring these diverse strands together into a single work.
6. What do you hope readers will gain from reading your book, and how do you envision it making a positive impact on their lives?
My greatest hope is that readers will become more independent in the way they evaluate geopolitical information.
The world can look very different when we examine historical events, economic interests, geography and power structures together rather than viewing each conflict as an isolated event.
I want readers to ask questions such as:
Why did this conflict begin? Who benefited economically? How did geography influence the outcome? What historical events created the conditions for it? And what interests shaped the decisions that followed?
The book also examines the growing economic imbalance between wealthy and poorer societies and explores the geopolitical factors that may contribute to this disparity.
Ultimately, I hope Ascent of Geopolitics encourages curiosity, critical thinking and a willingness to examine evidence before accepting any single narrative as absolute truth.
7. In a rapidly changing world, how does your book stay relevant for readers over time?
Although geopolitical events constantly change, many of the underlying principles of geopolitics remain remarkably persistent.
Geography, resources, trade routes, economic power, military strategy, political institutions and competition for influence continue to shape international relations.
This is why I designed Ascent of Geopolitics not merely as a book about current events, but as a broad historical reference.
The book covers such an extensive range of geopolitical and geoeconomic ideas that readers can return to it throughout their lives when trying to understand new developments.
There is also a gap in formal education when it comes to understanding geopolitics and geoeconomics as interconnected subjects.
My hope is that this book can help bridge some of that gap by encouraging readers to study history, economics and international relations together—and, most importantly, to think independently.
