Australian Open 2024: Rohan Bopanna Creates History, Advances To Semi-finals In Men’s Doubles

India’s legendary tennis player Rohan Bopanna created history on Wednesday (January 24). Along with his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Together they defeated the pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles event. Rohan and Ebden defeated the Argentinian pair by a margin of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

Bopanna has reached the semi-finals of the men’s doubles event for the first time in the Australian Open. With the victory in the quarter finals, they also created history. He reached the top of the men’s doubles tennis rankings. He achieved this feat for the first time. The special thing is that he has reached the top for the first time at the age of 43. Bopanna became the oldest player to become number-1 for the first time.

Bopanna, playing his 17th consecutive tournament at Melbourne Park, reached the Australian Open semi-finals for the first time in his career with the win on Court 3. Their previous best performance was reaching the third round. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals six times. Bopanna will be seen on top in the new rankings the day after the tournament ends. The pair of Bopanna and Ebden had lost in the final of the US Open last year. Four months later, both of them again reached the semi-finals of the Grand Slam.

 

All Reached The Semi-Finals Of Grand Slam

This victory of Bopanna has completed his record of reaching at least the semi-finals in all Grand Slams. After losing in four quarterfinals in 2011, 2016, 2018 and 2021, Bopanna reached the French Open semi-finals with Matvey Middelkoop in 2022. At Wimbledon, he reached the semi-finals three times in 2013, 2015 and 2023. At the same time, he has reached the finals in the US Open twice (2010 and 2023). He has not been able to win a Grand Slam in doubles till now.

The second-seeded men’s doubles pair will next face unseeded Zhang Zizhen of China and Tomas Machak of Czech Republic. Zhzhen and Machak defeated Adam Pavlasek and Ariel Behar 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. This great Indian player is now two wins away from his first Grand Slam trophy in men’s doubles. However, she is a mixed doubles Grand Slam champion. She won the French Open in 2017 with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski. Talking about Ebden, he has won Grand Slam in mixed doubles and men’s doubles. If Bopanna wins the title, he will become the oldest player to become a Grand Slam men’s doubles champion.
