If You Crave Fast Food, Relief from Constipation Will Be Hard to Find

New Delhi: In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, constipation has emerged as a common health problem. It not only causes digestive discomfort but, if persistent, can significantly affect quality of life and may also lead to other health complications. One of the key reasons behind this condition is the increasing consumption of fast food and a lack of nutritious, fiber-rich diets.

Globally, the prevalence of chronic constipation is estimated at around 14%, while in India it has risen to 12–22%. According to the Abbott Gut Health Survey (2018), nearly 22% of Indian adults suffer from constipation, with cities such as Kolkata (28%) and Chennai (26%) reporting the highest numbers. In urban areas, the prevalence stands at about 14%, which is higher than the global average. Alarmingly, this problem is now being increasingly observed among children and young adults as well. OPD data from hospitals in Delhi clearly point towards this changing trend.

Dr. Apurva Pande, Additional Director & HOD – Gastroenterology & Hepatology, said that in recent times a large number of school-going children and young adults have been visiting the OPD with complaints of constipation. The problem is particularly common in the 10–20 and 20–35 age groups. Nearly 20–25% of OPD patients are currently affected by constipation—significantly higher than in the past, when it was largely seen among the elderly due to reduced physical activity and other health issues.

Major causes of rising constipation include excessive intake of processed food, low fiber consumption, inadequate water intake, and lack of physical activity. Poor air quality has further reduced outdoor activities such as playing and walking among children and youth, negatively impacting bowel movement. Dr. Pandey advised adopting a balanced diet, drinking adequate water, and including regular exercise in daily routines.
