In the world of Indian television, actors often find themselves boxed into roles based on a single powerful performance. For Kavita Banerjee, who plays the formidable Karn Mohini in Divya Prem: Pyaar Aur Rahasya Ki Kahani on Sun Neo, this isn’t a concern — in fact, she sees it as a challenge worth embracing.
Typecast? Not a Problem
Kavita is well aware of how easily actors get labeled in the industry, especially when it comes to playing negative roles.
“Honestly, if you’ve followed Indian TV, you’d know how quickly actors get labeled,” she said.
“Even if you do just two shows as a villain, people start tagging you as a ‘villain actor.’ But if you start with back-to-back negative characters, the ‘villain stamp’ is almost unavoidable.”
Despite the risk of being typecast, Kavita isn’t fazed. She believes that playing negative roles allows for more depth and complexity as a performer.
Karn Mohini: A Grand and Powerful Antagonist
Kavita’s current role as Karn Mohini is no ordinary antagonist. Describing the character, she shared:
“She’s not just a regular villain — she’s grand, powerful, and commanding. And no, I’m not scared of being typecast. Playing a villain is way more challenging than playing a simple positive role.”
She also emphasized how different this character is from her real personality:
“In real life, I’m a cheerful, happy-go-lucky person — at least, I like to believe that!” she laughed.
The Joy of Exploring Unfamiliar Characters
For Kavita, acting is about transformation — stepping into lives far removed from her own.
“Acting is all about doing things I’m not in real life. That’s what excites me. Till now, I’ve mostly been offered negative roles, and I’m okay with that.”
But she’s also open to change:
“If someone can imagine me in a positive role too, I’d love to explore that side. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. That’s the real joy of being an actor — getting to play all kinds of characters.”
