Every few minutes, he looked at his phone.
Every unfamiliar ring made his heart race.
The cappuccino he had ordered had long gone cold.
For five long hours, entrepreneur, film producer and founder of the Ahmedabad International Literature Festival (AILF), Umashanker Yadav, walked the corridors of PD Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, waiting for a call that would determine the future of his family.
Those five anxious hours were preceded by fifteen days that tested his courage, faith and emotional resilience like never before.
It had all begun with what seemed to be a routine eye examination for his wife, Umlesh Yadav.
The diagnosis came as a shock. Doctors discovered that she had already lost nearly fifty percent of her vision and warned that without immediate medical intervention, the damage could become irreversible.
Determined to uncover the real cause, the family sought opinions from several leading specialists. Detailed investigations revealed that the problem was not an eye disorder at all. A tumour near the pituitary gland was compressing the optic nerves, while excessive secretion of growth hormone had also begun causing gradual physical changes.
The complexity of the condition meant that surgery would involve not only the brain but also the delicate optic nerves. Choosing the right medical team became the family’s most important decision.
Their search ultimately led them to renowned neurosurgeon Dr. B. K. Misra and his team at PD Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai.
Looking back, Yadav says no professional challenge had ever prepared him for those fifteen days.
“For over three decades, my wife and I have shared every joy and every struggle together. During those days, I found myself replaying countless memories while silently praying for just one outcome—that she would return home healthy. As a husband, I experienced fear in its purest form. Those five hours outside the operation theatre felt longer than any period of my life.”
Then came the moment he will never forget.
His phone rang.
He was asked to come to the fifth floor.
A few moments later, Dr. B. K. Misra looked at him calmly and said,
“Everything has gone well. She will be fine.”
According to the medical team, the tumour had been successfully removed, pressure on the optic nerves had been relieved, and Umlesh Yadav’s vision began showing encouraging improvement immediately after surgery. Doctors remain optimistic about her continued recovery.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Yadav acknowledged the extraordinary expertise and compassionate care of Dr. B. K. Misra. He also thanked Dr. Abhijit Warade, senior neurosurgeon on the surgical team, for patiently guiding the family through every stage of treatment and recovery. His appreciation extended to senior paediatrician Dr. Rupesh Shah and eminent neurophysician Dr. Pranav Kharod of Ahmedabad, whose constant guidance and encouragement gave the family strength throughout the difficult journey.
Reflecting on the experience, Yadav said it reinforced a few lessons that extend far beyond medicine.
“Never ignore unusual health symptoms. Seek expert medical opinions whenever necessary. Prepare financially so that quality healthcare is never compromised. Above all, never lose hope. Modern medical science, timely diagnosis and the dedication of skilled doctors save lives every single day.”
Yadav revealed that the family deliberately chose not to make the medical situation public while treatment was underway, sharing it only with a handful of close friends and relatives. Only after the successful surgery did he feel ready to express his gratitude to everyone who stood beside the family with prayers, encouragement and unwavering support.
He says the experience transformed his understanding of success.
“Businesses can be rebuilt. Awards can wait. Public recognition fades with time. But hearing a doctor say, ‘Everything has gone well. She will be fine,’ is a moment no achievement can ever equal.”
Today, as Umlesh Yadav continues her recovery, the family looks ahead with renewed hope and profound gratitude.
Because sometimes life’s greatest victories are not celebrated on a stage.
