This Ganesha Festival, Nellai Society of Chembur is set to resonate with the enchanting sounds of Indian classical music, reviving a cherished tradition that once thrived in Mumbai. The excitement is palpable as residents and committee members unite to bring back the golden age of cultural celebration through “Tribhukti – The Confluence.”
There was a time when the city’s Ganpati festival was synonymous with performances by legendary artists such as Bhimsen Joshi, Mallikarjun Mansoor, and Jitendra Abhisheki. Over the years, however, the presence of classical music at these festivals has diminished, leaving only a few havens where this art form still thrives.
Determined to rekindle this rich legacy, Nellai Society has curated Tribhukti – The Confluence, a concert that blends tradition with the dynamism of today’s leading young musicians. The event will feature sitar virtuoso Sweekar Katti, master flautist Hrishikesh Majumdar, and gifted tabla artist Rohit Deo.
The concert will take place on 9th September 2024, at 7:30 pm at the podium of Nellai Heights, located at Pandit C. R. Vyas Marg, Plot no. 16-18, Swastik Park, Chembur, Mumbai. This special event is open to the public, inviting music lovers and devotees alike to experience the divine synergy of these talented artists. The society has been organising this concert for the past 12 years.
In a city where modernity often overshadows tradition, this initiative by the Nellai Society stands as a beacon, encouraging other communities to integrate classical music into their celebrations. Such efforts not only preserve our cultural heritage but also instill these timeless values in future generations.
Meet the Artists:
Sweekar Katti is a prodigious sitarist, born into a family with deep musical roots. Trained by his father, Dr. Sunil Katti, a maestro in both sitar and santoor, Sweekar has mastered the intricate “Gayaki Ang” style of the Etawah Gharana (Imdadkhani Gharana). His performances, known for their emotional depth and technical brilliance, have captivated audiences both in India and internationally.
Hrishikesh Majumdar, a versatile and talented flautist, continues the legacy of his father, the illustrious Pandit Ronu Majumdar. Representing the Maihar Gharana, Hrishikesh’s music is a seamless blend of the ancient Dhrupad style and lighter classical forms like Thumri and Dadra. His artistry reflects both his rigorous training and his passion for innovation.
Rohit Deo, a young tabla artist with a lineage steeped in music, is the disciple of the renowned Taalmani Pandit Mukundraj Deo. His dedication to the tabla has earned him a National Scholarship from the Government of India.
Join us at Nellai Society as we embark on this journey of cultural revival through Tribhukti – The Confluence. Let the rhythms and melodies of Indian classical music uplift your spirit and enrich your Ganesha Festival celebrations.
