Dr. Robert Itai Clive Basvi’s Ph.D. thesis, titled “What Steps Are Followed for the Integration of Safety and Quality Management Systems? A Study of Selected Airlines”, examines the practical implementation of integrating Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Quality Management Systems (QMS) in the aviation industry. The research analyzes case studies from aviation professionals worldwide and identifies duplication, complementarities, and integration challenges. It proposes a structured template to guide airlines in fusing SMS and QMS processes to improve efficiency, reduce role duplication, enhance risk management, and strengthen regulatory compliance. The study ultimately advocates for a synergistic, performance-based integrated management approach within airline operations.
Dr Robert Itai Clive Basvi is an Airline Executive whose Aviation journey began 35 years ago when he started apprenticeship training as an aircraft maintenance engineer. After qualifying in 1994 he worked as a licensed AME doing both Line and Base Aircraft Maintenance. His experience includes working in Continuing Airworthiness Maintenance and working in Safety and Quality Management in Aviation.
His desire to explore more of the industry and getting to grips with every facet of Aviation management saw him pursuing an MBA program and went into Aviation Consultancy work. Robert’s leadership and relationship building ability saw him being Head hunted to join Airline Executive management teams in key departments in aviation. Compelled by the principle of continual improvement anchored on continual learning Robert took up the PhD program with IMSR. Robert believes that the IMSR PhD and research gave him an opportunity to explore the virtues of digging for knowledge and using same to innovate new knowledge.
Robert’s PhD thesis was based on the integration of Quality and Safety Management Systems in Aviation, something that is still at its infancy in the industry. He proposed a template that could be used as a reference in the integration of SMS and QMS in the Aviation industry.
Besides being an Aviator Robert has passion for Entrepreneurship, no wonder his major in his MBA was in Entrepreneurship Management and this time around for his PhD he returned to his first love Aviation. As he leads in his current position in the Aviation industry, Robert combines the innovation of entrepreneurship with the safety demands and precision of Aviation to nurture future Aviation leaders.
Dr Basvi is no stranger to books as his major pastime is reading extensively. He believes that he should never stop learning and will continue to pursue value addition for himself and others through continual study and research.
