Bohurupi, the Bengali blockbuster that captivated audiences in theatres, has now taken the digital world by storm. Since its premiere on ZEE5 on May 9, the gripping heist thriller has garnered a staggering 15.7 million views, setting a new benchmark for Bengali cinema in the OTT space.
Directed by the acclaimed duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Bohurupi is inspired by true events involving a series of bank robberies in West Bengal between 1998 and 2005. The story follows Bikram played by Shiboprosad Mukherjee himself a wrongfully accused man who, after enduring brutal police torture, transforms into a master of disguise.
The film features a stellar ensemble cast which includes Shiboprasad Mukherjee, Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty , and Koushani Mukherjee . The nuanced performances and layered storytelling have struck a chord with audiences across the board.
After its grand theatrical release on October 8, 2024, during Durga Puja, Bohurupi emerged as one of the biggest hits of the yeargrossing over ₹22.5 crore against a modest budget of ₹4–5 crore. It became the second highest-grossing Bengali film of 2024, and now, with its OTT success, the film has solidified its status as a cultural phenomenon.
